Sendai Tanabata Matsuri

Summer is the season for festivals in Japan and in Sendai the biggest summer festival is the Tanabata Matsuri in August. Tanabata happens later in Sendai than in most other parts of Japan.

This picture was taken in Sendai station. When you arrive you can see beautiful decorations hanging in the main station building.

The day I visited Sendai was very windy. There were decorations hanging in the main shopping areas of Sendai, and they looked spectacular as they moved in the breeze.

The decorations this year showed many different themes. I took pictures of some of my favorites which you can see below.

Please leave comments on this page if you have ever been to the Tanabata matsuri. You can do it by clicking on the word Comments below.

Hanagasa Festival in Yamagata

I went to the Hanagasa Festival in Yamagata City.

Every year, for three nights in August people dance in the streets.

The parade goes down the main street of Yamagata - Nanokamachidori.

Many schools and company workers participate in the parade and it is a very popular event. People come from many places to see the Hanagasa festival.

You can see the parade here.

Have you ever been to the Hanagasa matsuri? What did you think of it?
